Case Study
Beacon View Academy
Multi utility supply of gas, electric and water for new school build completed in double quick time!
As part of the Education & Skills Funding Agency’s Priority Schools Building Programme, a new modular school for Beacon View Primary Academy in Portsmouth was agreed, with the current school being demolished once the new school build completed.
Contractors Elliott Group Ltd, appointed Harlaxton to install and connect gas, water and electricity to the new school in a challenging timescale of just one month. The experts at Harlaxton managed to deliver in just 24 days – over a week ahead of the customer’s expectations.
The challenges
• Project Management – the current school remained fully open and operational during the construction period – so we had to ensure that the existing supply of utilities was not affected and there was minimal disruption to the school.
• Timescales – the new school had to be open for pupils from the start of the school year meaning Harlaxton only had one month to deliver the entire project.
• Land ownership – our design and legal teams worked together to provide a solution for our client that ensured we did not have to cross adjoining land in order to install and maintain cabling and piping.
Solution
By working closely with all parties, using our expertise to circumnavigate a way through industry regulations and find a workable solution, and keeping a close eye on the project management, we ensured we delivered the utility infrastructure required, ahead of the customer’s deadline.
Services provided
• 400 Amp supply with a low voltage point of connection (POC) onto existing electricity supply
• 110m trench for low voltage cabling in highways land (roads and footpaths)
• 470kW gas supply into external GC5 gas kiosk, 90mm CSEP connection onto 400mm Southern Gas Networks (SGN) parent main
• Project managed the Portsmouth Water connections
• In-house legal team
• Onsite works completed in 2 days
Results
• 24 days from handover to completion
• Harlaxton’s in house legal and design teams ensured flexibility
Time was of the essence with this project and we combined the skills of many of our team to find a solution that met the exacting timescales required. We avoided lengthy easements by moving the position of gas and electric kiosks onto highways land, and dealt with traffic management as well. We also project managed Portsmouth Water to ensure they met their targets and avoided any knock on delays that would cause.
“The work had the potential to cause significant disruption but through careful planning and excellent communication the team at Harlaxton were able to complete the work rapidly and ahead of schedule, with inconvenience to the customer minimal. “ Richard Senior, Contracts Manager, Elliott Group
