Case Study
Bowman Cold Store
Future proofing Bowman’s chilled stores power supply
UK family business Bowman Stores provides refrigerated storage solutions for the storage of meat, fish and dairy products. To meet the growing demand for their high standard of refrigerated storage, they have expanded their premises by building a new cold storage warehouse at their site in Spalding, Lincolnshire.
To stay ahead of the game, Bowman Stores needed to find an effective and professional power infrastructure solution which would not only cope with the additional load the new cold stores would require, but would also future proof it for years to come.
“We have previously worked with Harlaxton on various projects with positive results. When we were expanding our premises with additional power requirements they were the natural choice for us. Knowing that their technical knowledge and expertise would achieve our requirements we were pleased to work with them again. The recent project has not been without challenges but Harlaxton have kept us updated with the developments throughout.”
Peter Bowman, MD, Bowman Stores
The challenges
•Timescales – ensuring supply was received promptly to avoid any loss of power and use of backup generators.
•Navigating industry regulations for increasing existing supply.
•Legal issues relating to land and access rights – a common cause of delay for infrastructure projects as it usually involves third parties such as councils and landowners.
Solution
Installation of additional electricity infrastructure to enable connection within agreed timescales.
Services provided
•4MVA supply
•Onsite works completed in 5 days
•In-house legal team
•Technical expertise with industry regulators
•Award winning customer focused solutions
Results
•New connection completed in 4 days
•No interim generator solution needed so reducing unnecessary overheads and potential losses
Harlaxton was able to build on its long-standing relationship with the successful family business, to provide the infrastructure necessary for a scalable electricity power supply to enable connection in the agreed timescale and within budget.
Because of a number of legal issues the client faced with landowners, there was a risk the project could be delayed and cause the client to have a new facility without any power supply. Thanks to the company’s technical expertise, Harlaxton was able to suggest a solution and liaise with the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to organise a partial upgrade to be made available, ensuring the client’s initial requirements were met. Harlaxton also led the ongoing liaison with the DNO to arrange off-site works within the vicinity of the local shopping centre.
